On any given day you will be able to find something somewhere in the media about the topic of diversity and inclusion.  Legislation has been in place for many years and lots of people have written about and discussed the business benefits of an inclusive culture, but this topic still remains a mystery for many people.


Diversity in the Media

Just this morning I have seen articles in the press about the discussions being had in respect to a “lack of diversity in the Oscars Nominees” and the proposals to increase diversity among senior management and board members within the technology giant that is Apple. 

What saddens and slightly puzzles me is why we still have to have these arguments.  Creating a culture of diversity and inclusion within any business should form a strong part of its overall strategy- Diversity and inclusion should not be the poor relation that is put on the backburner or put out in the cold, it should be a cornerstone of your business.

By creating a culture of understanding, respect and awareness within your business, you are going to be able to improve internal communications, create better collaboration between colleagues, enhance the customer experience and boost the reputation of your business.

What should I do?

We have talked in previous articles about the need to take a proactive and strategic approach to the issue of diversity and inclusion-This has to start by thinking about the level of understanding within your business and which sets out a very clear strategy over the next few years of what you and everyone within your business is going to do to increase this.   

The most effective way to create a culture of diversity and inclusion is not to simply think of it as meeting a quota, satisfying legal or regulatory requirements but to embrace the individual personalities that work with you.

I guarantee that taking a strategic and proactive attitude towards the subject of diversity and inclusion will yield some amazing results.
